Yangtze Town People On Quay As Yangtze River Cruise Boat Docks For Night.
A Luxury Yangtze River cruise boat, a sunny day, and the anticipation of a journey through the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River to get to Wuhan. What else could anyone ask for during a tour of the main attractions of China? Soon after leaving Chongqing there were photos to take of the Yangtze embankment or of other boats of different types, moving with the Yangtze River currents downriver. It was truly puzzling how people living in small farmhouses built on the steep embankments of the Yangtze were able to exist, for the only access to the houses appeared to be from the river itself. Some of the banks were terraced for the cultivation of vegetables, but there was no evidence of other means of earning a living in the vicinity. At one point, about 10 people, in a small boat moving down river, had two oarsmen standing at the prow using their long-handled oars to steer the shallow boat through the turbulent eddies. It is assumed that these people were accustomed to such journeys and were aware of the risks. The raging waters of the Yangtze are not very tolerant to people who fall into the river, as we would see during a later part of our cruise. The members of the tour group felt much safer on their cruise boat, perhaps because they were not familiar with living near such a raging river.

The cruise was to take us about one and a half days to get from Chongqing to Wuhan, which involved an overnight stop at a riverside town. We did have 'shore-leave' from our tour guide, so a few of us walked the gangplank to get onto the quay and then walked up a steep road to get a quick view of the town. It was poorly lit, it was late, and it was very quiet, so we assumed that most of the people had already retired for the night. When we returned to the cruise boat, we watched porters with shoulder poles carrying supplies onto the boat. When we went to the upper deck rails and looked down at the quay, we saw a group of people standing or sitting on top of a quay wall, watching the foreigners on their cruise boat. No wonder the streets of the town were quiet, we had wanted to see the people, so they had come to see us!
In 1987, seeing foreign tourists was not a regular part of daily life for the people living in small isolated towns inland or on the Yangtze River embankments. On this occasion there was an added attraction, for the Yangtze Cruise boat was on its maiden voyage and was bedecked with colored flags. Undoubtedly we would have been just as eager to witness the event, if it had been a spaceship landing in one of our local fields!

Four of China's five main freshwater lakes contribute their waters to the Yangtze River. Traditionally, the upstream part of the Yangtze River refers to the section from Yibin to Yichang; the middle part refers to the section from Yichang to Hukou, where Boyang Lake meets the river; the downstream part is from Hukou to Shanghai.
